DIAMICRON MR: a new approach to the treatment of type 2 diabetes

Discovered by Servier research, DIAMICRON MR is an innovative, once-daily oral antidiabetic which belongs to the class of sulfonylureas. Sulfonylureas are the most widely used antidiabetic agents worldwide and were recently recognized by the IDF Global Guidline 2005 as a cornerstone of type 2 diabetes treatment, from the early stages in monotherapy to the late stages, in combination with other agents or with insulin.
As a global metabolic and vascular approach to type 2 diabetes treatment, DIAMICRON MR provides effective glycemic control over 24 hours and in the long term, strengthened by its protective effects on pancreatic ß-cells and its direct cardiovascular benefits.
DIAMICRON MR allows a once-daily dosage, regardless of the daily dose, due to its innovative hydrophilic matrix which is used for the first time in diabetology. This modified-release formulation is designed to match the release of active ingredient with circadian hyperglycemic profile and thus offers an effective blood glucose control round-the-clock. The choice of once-daily therapy is a key factor to improving patient compliance.
Moreover, DIAMICRON MR shows the highly selective, freely reversible, and high-affinity interaction with ß-cell sulfonylurea receptors, which explains both its optimized cardiovascular acceptability, reduced risk of hypoglycemia, efficient secretagogue effect, and unsurpassed long-term glycemic control of this agent.
Beyond effective glycemic control, DIAMICRON MR provides unique antioxidant properties11,12 which explain the preservation of ß-cells fuction12,13, the beneficial effect on endothelial function. and a potent antiatherogenic effect.
